From de-, the prefix of removal, and creed, a formal statement of belief, finished with - dom, the ending that gave English freedom and wisdom, both of which tend to arrive here together. The language has always been rich in words for losing a belief (renouncer, apostate, defector) and poor in words for what may be gained from that loss. Pronounced DE-kree-DOM.
