Coinage notes
Sober + -crat, from Greek kratos (power), the sobrocrat is one whose mandate is entirely self-issued. Prohibition enforced sobriety through the law and the pulpit; after its repeal sobriety retreated into the private sphere. Now it’s public again, and “sober” has spread beyond the bottle, with everything from sugar to screens being policed, but on health grounds rather than legal or religious ones.
